Lake Programs

Protecting Our Lakes:
Programs for a Healthy and Vibrant Future

We are dedicated to protecting and enhancing the health, beauty, and recreational quality of our lake for today and for future generations. Our efforts are driven by a variety of programs focused on education, conservation, and safety, all powered by our dedicated members and community volunteers.

Lake Programs with the SGLA

The success of these programs relies on our dedicated volunteers. To learn more about how you can join a Shoreline Sweep, install a buffer garden, or assist with a fisheries project, please visit our Volunteer Page and our Aquatic Invasive Species Page to learn more about our efforts on AIS.

Shoreline Protection & Buffer Gardens

A healthy lake begins with a healthy shoreline. Natural shorelines filter runoff, absorb nutrients, stabilize the bank against erosion, and provide essential habitat for fish, birds, and other wildlife. Our program encourages property owners to transition away from turf grass and hard structures toward native landscaping.

We provide resources and guidance on creating native buffer gardens—areas of native plants adjacent to the water. These gardens act as a sponge to absorb phosphorus and nitrogen from lawn runoff before it enters the lake, helping to prevent algae growth.  Click here to learn more about the SGLA buffer garden program and consider participating!

Fisheries

Our lake's fishery is a cherished resource for anglers and a vital part of the ecosystem. We work in partnership with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to monitor the fish population and ensure a sustainable and healthy environment for all species.

We assist the DNR with fish population surveys, ensuring accurate data is collected to inform stocking decisions and regulatory changes.

When necessary, we raise funds to supplement DNR efforts with the stocking of native game fish to maintain a balanced and high-quality fishery.  If you would like to donate to our fisheries program, visit the membership page to make a donation.

Boating Safety

The LDF Tribe has banned the operation of wakeboats on all reservation waters. See below for more information. Safety and courtesy on the water is paramount for a positive experience for all lake users and residents. Please know and follow all state and local boating regulations to ensure that everyone can enjoy the lake and be safe. Be a good neighbor!

View the Tribal Ordinance banning wakeboats on reservation waters; for SGLA this means all of Gunlock Lake and the portion of Shish that is within Vilas County.

See this map for the location of no wake and other buoy markers on Gunlock and Shish.

Water Quality Monitoring and Lake Studies

Volunteers venture out yearly to take water quality samples and report their findings to the DNR. We also engage in Point Intercept Studies where 3rd party water quality professionals perform intensive lake surveys once every 5 years and report on water clarity, quality and plant life populations in our lakes. These studies are required in order for SGLA to be eligible for DNR grants to address AIS issues.
